Hello,

I'm Kelsey

I recently joined Saint Louis University's Communication Department as a tenure-track assistant professor of journalism, after completing my PhD at Wayne State University, in Detroit, Michigan. I research at the intersection of journalism and organizational communication, with a focus on anti-media rhetoric and hostility toward journalists, resilience, and gender. Given a growing concern over harassment and hostility toward journalists, my dissertation project sought to better understand the ways journalists experience the trickle-down effects of anti-media rhetoric; how women and minority journalists experience these effects to different, possibly heightened degrees; and how journalists enact resilience given these challenges. Thus, the ultimate goal was to understand what strategies journalists use to be resilient and keep doing their jobs, despite safety concerns and daily struggles within their own journalistic routines and practices, and while their profession is attacked at the national level. Notably, I was recently awarded the 2020 Mary Gardner Award for Graduate Student Research from AEJMC's Commission on the Status of Women for my dissertation's potential contribution to the field at the intersection of journalism and gender.

While I prefer qualitative methods, I’m trained as a mixed-methods scholar. I have worked on projects using interviews, surveys, experimental design, ethnographic, and community-based research methods. My research has been published in Journalism & Communication Monographs, Journalism Studies, Journalism PracticeMedia Report to Women and Western Journal of Communication, with additional work published as book chapters.

I received my MA in communication and my MBA from Kent State University in Ohio, and I grew up outside of Youngstown, Ohio. My background is in print journalism. I’ve worked for The Columbus Dispatch, The Chautauquan Daily, Cleveland Magazine, Ohio Magazine, and multiple regional magazines.

When I'm not reading, writing, or grading students' work, I like to visit the zoo with my son and take long hikes with my fur-babies, Harley Quinn and Snoop. They keep me on my toes! I also enjoy kickboxing, weight lifting, and cooking (although I'll admit — I cheat and use a meal-kit service!)
